A few weeks ago our office received the email below.
On further investigation we found this email to be sent from our clients own email address, but not by our client. This was a hacker that had been able to intercept our clients emails and act as our client. The email below was sent to many of her clients if not
all.
How did the hacker get in to her computer? Our client believes that when she performed a Microsoft update yesterday, it was actually a scam and she was not aware of it until it was too late. Our client clicked the button to perform the update and then was asked to enter her password. Shazam… She believes they were able to obtain her password then and enter her computer.
Here is the email they sent:
Thanks for responding, Actually, I need to get a ITUNES GIFT CARD for my niece, it’s her birthday today but I can’t do this now because I’m currently away. This method is neither graceful! Or fast!, and I tried purchasing online but unfortunately no luck with that. Can you get it from any store around you? I will reimburse you with the money spent. kindly let me know if you can handle this. Await your soonest response.
At our office we use NordVPN and Total AV. This has prompted us to review our security and ensure we have the best on market at this time.
This is a timely reminder to check your antivirus software and consider a Virtual Private Network.
