The Swearing Yoga Instructor

I have recently located to Malaysia and running my business from there, with the help of an awesome team based in Parkdale.

Prior to Covid, I had my doubts around if this was even going to be possible. Covid gave the world a fast track lesson in working from home. Covid taught me that WFH, in the end could actually be anywhere in the world and so the move transpired.

Just prior to arriving I was also diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The outcome was a good result, however the ongoing obsessions were soon to follow. I arrived into Malaysia with some hell bent ideas, for lifestyle change. One of these was to ‘finally’ embrace Yoga.

I needed to find a non-yogary, non budisty, teacher that could keep me on track and interested. A passionate and inspiring person that was not the normal cliché’s ‘perfect in pictures posing’ sort that I had seen, many times before.

Then I found Caterina who was a 56 years old, food loving Italian who grew up in Austria… and swore… all the time, as it turns out.

Caterina was a very knowledgeable and talented yoga teacher and just what I needed.

Caterina was memorable and stood out because she was different. Caterina was not ‘trying’ to run the best business ever, she just was. You were immediately at ease in her presence. Not at all intimidating, like other instructors can be.

It turns out that Caterina can teach us a lot about small business. Caterina had a point of difference in her field which attracted me to her. She was not trying to fit the profile of the usual yoga teacher. She was different, and proud.

Embrace your differences. Don’t compete with a Goliath if you are a David. Work out what is good about being a David and let everyone know. Discover your Niche and you will grow.

As I was finishing a tough and deflating lesson last week, Caterina said to me ‘Sorry but I need to talk to your body, in a not very kind way.’

Then Caterina spoke to my body and said ‘ Don’t F*@k with me body. She gave me an air kiss and a smile, then told me she would see me on Wednesday.
